Local Attractions...
Around our Wellington site we have one of the greatest playgrounds for young and old to enjoy. It all depends on how fit and keen you are, and what you like doing. * * * Very local (only a few minutes away by car!) * * *
Tunnel Gully
There is a disused railway line runs through the Rimutaka mountains to the Wairarapa. A nice walk and to reach the summit, and the return trip takes around 2 hours( there are several variations of this including walking right through plus the return journey, or walking through and have someone meet you on the other side. Take a torch as there are a couple of tunnels to walk through. This is well maintained and is a popular walk. Level of fitness required is minimal. And if you have a bike, it is a great and easy ride.
Off to the right hand side at the start of this walk is a track which goes to the top of Mount Climie which is the highest peak around the Wellington area. It is a steep walk and takes a couple of hours to reach the top. Only try this on a nice day as the peak is high and you need warm clothing when you reach the top even in the middle of summer. Fantastic views to the south Island and all the way up the Wairarapa. It is an amazing sight during the weekend to see gliders swirling around close to you as they ride the thermal air currents!
Kaitoke water works
This is where the main water supply for the Wellington area comes from. There are some nice picnic spots, and 20minute walks through native bush. For the fitter people get someone to drop you off and try the 2 hour walk back to the storage lakes and the cross the main road back to the club.
Rimutaka Forest Park
Only a few hundred metres up the road from the Kaitoke water works turnoff, is Marchant Road which leads to one of the four main entrances to the Taraua's, a formidable tramping and camping area for the fit outdoor enthusiasts. Stroll over the "puffer" track and into the valley from which one can venture in several different directions. Some knowledge of bushcraft is essential, or a guide and suitable maps of the area, to avoid getting lost!
Both of the above are part of the Wellington Regional council. They also issue permits to people who wish to hunt or fish in the local area. There are also trout in the local Hutt river but you need a license to fish for them.
Wellington Stock Cars.
Saturday evening's entertainment with the crash, bang of stock cars trying to out muscle each other on a quarter mile race track. Super saloons are often a highlight, with supercharged and super-powered racing saloons motoring around this oval dirt track at over 120 miles per hour, and frequently on 2 or 3 wheels. A great adrenalin rush for all and fun for the kids. This is within walking distance.

Staglands and Efildoog
("good life" spelt backwards)
Only 20 minutes away up the Akatarawa valley.
Get up close and personal with a great range of local farm and New Zealand animals. Great fun for the both the kids and adults. And on the way back call into Efildoog and admire one of the top gardening showpieces in the Wellington area.
For more details: Staglands Wildlife Reserve & CafeHarcourt Park
This is a nice park with some beautiful trees set on the edge of the Hutt River, and used in many of the Lord of the Rings scenes. Follow the track along past the Rimutaka Soccer Club rooms and grounds to the duck pond and feed the poor starving creatures with your stale and mouldy bread. Being scavengers they are not fussy!
Cannon point walkway
Entrance from Bridge road Akatarawa, Stroll up to the old dam and then continue on around the cannon point track and back along the river track to where you start from.
Heading south from the Wellington Naturist club,...
we find the Hutt river trail, a cycling/walking track that goes all the way down the river (27 kilometres) to the sea. If you try this we recommend you come back by train, as it is all uphill, which may suit the fitness addicts, but not the rest of us.
At Trentham
we have the Trentham Race Course plus one of the top rifle ranges in the country - For more details see .. National Rifle Association (NZ)
